Frequently asked questions
Is it important to have a curettage if I have plaque on my teeth?
The first step in gum disease is the formation of a layer of plaque on the tooth. This layer turns into hard calculus and causes inflammation in the gum. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic periodontal inflammation, bone and tooth loss.
Is dental curettage painful?
As with most dental treatments, before performing the curettage, the dentist applies local anesthesia, so the patient does not suffer any pain during the treatment.
Once the effect of the anesthesia has worn off, the patient may have some sensitivity in those areas where the scaling has been deeper. In any case, these discomforts are usually very mild and disappear in a few hours.
Is curettage performed on the entire mouth?
To apply the treatment, the mouth is divided into four quadrants, two upper and two lower. Depending on the type of periodontitis you are suffering from, it will be necessary to perform the curettage in two or all four quadrants.
Does curettage whiten teeth?
Dental scaling removes all traces of plaque from the teeth. Therefore, after a curettage, you will see your teeth cleaner and possibly whiter.
Does dental scaling damage the teeth or gums?
Dental scaling does not damage the teeth if performed by certified hands. After dental scaling and root planing, the gum may become sensitive, bleed, and swell, but this is a temporary symptom, and the gum generally begins to improve a few days after the procedure.
Can I eat normally after a dental scaling?
You can eat directly after a scaling, but it is preferable to avoid sticky, hard, spicy and/or acidic foods.
How often should I have a dental scaling?
The frequency of a scaling and root planing treatment differs depending on the condition of the gum and should be analyzed by the specialist doctor in gum disease (periodontist). In general, it is recommended to undergo the procedure between 2 and 4 times a year depending on the case.
