What is a periodontogram?

A periodontogram is a graphical representation that records the condition of the gums affected by periodontal disease: periodontitis.

In short, the periodontogram is used to record the depth of tartar accumulated in the gums. In turn, this level of tartar is the indicator that allows dentists to determine the extent of periodontitis – also called pyorrhea.

To check the depth of the tartar, it is necessary to use an instrument known as a periodontal probe. Therefore, the periodontal probe measures the level of tartar so that the dentist can then record the values in the periodontogram.

When is a periodontogram performed?

The periodontogram is used in patients who have periodontitis. That is, in those who suffer from an infection in the gums caused by the accumulation of bacteria in their mouth.

If periodontitis is not treated, the bacteria begin to cause irreversible damage to teeth and gums, as well as to the bone that supports the teeth.

This causes the person to begin to experience mobility in their teeth, and these, over time, end up falling out.

That said, the periodontogram is not, in itself, a treatment against periodontitis. That is, it must be carried out as part of a more complete procedure: periodontal treatment.

Or, failing that, it should be used at the beginning of treatment to diagnose the disease. In this way, the dentist can measure the depth of tartar in the gums and know the state of the periodontitis.

Once this is done, he records the data obtained in the periodontogram. With this, he can not only determine exactly the treatment that the patient needs, depending on their level of tartar.

In addition, in the future, you will be able to check the initial and final records to determine if the treatment has worked.

Procedure

1. Probing

The probe is gently inserted between the gum and the tooth, indicating the depth. This procedure is performed around all the teeth.

2. Interpretation

The graph that is formed once the probing is done is interpreted on a scale measured in millimeters.

3. Diagnosis

With the results obtained, the phase of periodontal disease is determined, and the periodontist decides which treatment is the most appropriate.

Depending on the depth of the tartar, the dentist may prescribe one treatment or another. However, all these procedures involve performing root scaling and planing – also called curettage.
