What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of the tissues surrounding the tooth, i.e., the gum and the periodontal ligament. We refer to gingivitis and periodontal disease as the main entities.

Records all data from a periodontal examination and contains space to add any information deemed appropriate. It is used as a diagnostic tool for the patient’s gingival health.

Tartrectomy

Tartrectomy, more commonly known as dental cleaning, is the procedure that removes bacterial plaque and tartar from the teeth.

Periodontal surgery

Periodontal surgery or scaling and root planing (SRP) is a procedure that removes subgingival calculus (tartar) that is trapped under the gum and cannot be removed by tartrectomy or conventional cleaning.

Periodontal maintenance

Once periodontal treatment has been performed, it is very important for the patient to have a control and maintenance of the gums so that the disease does not become active again.

Who is it for?

Periodontics is aimed at patients who suffer from periodontal disease (pyorrhea). This disease is irreversible, but if detected in time, it can be stopped and its progression prevented. The objective of periodontics is precisely to prevent this disease from progressing and to maintain optimal health of the tissues surrounding the tooth.

Why do I have periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is due to multiple causes: the two main ones are the accumulation of tartar and the lack of oral hygiene. If not treated correctly, it causes inflammation of the gums, bone loss and even tooth loss.

At Abaden, we generally recommend having two cleanings per year. However, if you have periodontal disease or a predisposition to it, your dentist will tell you the interval of visits you should follow.

How should I care for my gums?

Your dentist will explain how you should care for your gums, brush and floss. It is very important that you follow the instructions and go to the check-ups so that the disease does not worsen.
