Exodontia

Although many people express certain reservations about an exodontia, the truth is that this treatment is one of the most common in dental practice. In addition, recovery after an extraction is quick, and the discomfort is much more bearable than it may seem at first.

What is an exodontia?

An exodontia is a surgical procedure that involves extracting one or more teeth. Normally, extraction is used when a patient has a tooth in very poor condition, which makes it unfeasible for it to remain in the mouth for much longer.

Exodontia can be total (a tooth is extracted completely) or partial (a part of the tooth that has remained retained in the socket is removed).

In addition, exodontia is an essential treatment in a large number of cases that we will see below. That is, it can serve to cure or prevent a health problem.

When is exodontia performed?

There are many reasons that can lead us to perform an exodontia. The most common is that the need for this treatment originates from cavities or periodontal disease (periodontitis).

This is due to the process of destruction generated by cavities and periodontitis – also called pyorrhea – in both the soft tissues (gum) and hard tissues (maxillary bone) of the oral cavity.

In addition, there are times when it is necessary to resort to extraction due to different dental anomalies. For example, severe defects that affect the position, impacted teeth or supernumerary teeth.

On the other hand, sometimes it is not necessary for the patient to be in any of the above circumstances to perform an exodontia. That is, there are other cases in which it is advisable to extract a tooth. For example, when the person has a cyst or tumor or when the discomfort and infection caused by the eruption of the wisdom teeth must be eliminated.

Procedure

1. Application of anesthesia

The dentist uses anesthesia to numb the area of the tooth that is going to be extracted and avoid pain and discomfort.

2. Tooth extraction

With the help of his instruments, the dentist separates the tooth from the bone. When it is loose, he removes it from the socket.

3. Wound closure

To facilitate coagulation and healing, the dentist will compress the walls of the socket or use stitches.

Frequently asked questions

Is exodontia painful?

Exodontia is a treatment that is performed under local anesthesia. The fact that the area is numb means that the patient does not feel pain or discomfort during the procedure. The only thing that is usually felt is some pressure in the area.

However, during the following days it is common to experience certain discomforts, which are bearable thanks to the anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication prescribed by the dentist.

But, in addition, and with the aim of making the treatment as comfortable as possible for the patient, the dentist will recommend a series of guidelines prior to and after the extraction. In this way, possible complications, such as an infection, will be avoided.

Before the dentist performs an exodontia, it is advisable to follow the following advice:

  • Inform the dentist about any disease or allergy that you suffer from, as well as the medications you take for these reasons
  • Do not drink alcohol the two days prior to the extraction
  • Rest adequately the night before
  • Take the medication prescribed by the specialist

Once the extraction has been done, it is also recommended to follow some recommendations to avoid complications:

  • Place a gauze over the intervened area and bite it gently
  • Do not spit or touch the wound with your tongue
  • Place a cold compress on the cheek of the affected area
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not brush the intervened area in the first 24 hours
  • Take the anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication prescribed by the dentist
  • Opt for a soft and cold diet

If you follow these recommendations for care before and after exodontia you will see how everything goes well and no complications arise after the extraction.

Yes. The reasons for placing implants after an exodontia are many. Among them:

  • Avoid the progressive loss of bone in the absence of the tooth.
  • Prevent the mobility of neighboring teeth.
  • Restore the ability to chew.
  • Recover dental aesthetics.

Once a tooth is lost, the bone in which it was anchored also loses height and width. That is, it is as if it atrophied progressively.

Therefore, the most recommended thing, in most cases, is to place the implant three months after the surgery. In this way, we will avoid bone resorption, as well as movements in neighboring teeth, which would make it difficult to replace the dental piece.

I had my first visit with them on the recommendation of a friend and I couldn't be more satisfied. I don't like going to the dentist because it generates a lot of respect for me, but I have to say that Leonor and the rest of the professionals have made it very easy. They have explained all the processes step by step, making me feel very informed at all times.
