What is a skull cephalometric radiograph?

A cephalometric radiograph is an X-ray that obtains a digital view of the skull and bony structures of the face.

This type of X-ray has the peculiarity that it is performed at a greater distance than usual.

This is because, in this way, it is possible to obtain a sharper image of both the maxillary bones and the patient’s teeth.

What is a cephalometric radiograph used for?

Skull cephalometric radiography is a resource often used by maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists.

This is because it is used to detect abnormalities in bones and teeth, as well as to plan orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatments.

And, more specifically, cephalometric radiographs are used to measure both the skull and the rest of the facial structures: maxilla, mandible, and teeth.

And, with this, to be able to study their proportions, angles, and distances.

With all this information, the specialist (maxillofacial surgeon or dentist) will be able to draw a cephalometry.

What is cephalometry?

Cephalometry is a fundamental technique in any orthodontic study.

It is obtained through a cephalometric radiograph and is used to determine if the patient’s measurements and proportions are adequate.

Or if, on the contrary, the patient needs treatment to improve them.

Ultimately, cephalometry is used to compare the patient’s measurements with normality patterns.

How many types of cephalometric radiographs are there?

Depending on the image you want to obtain (frontal or lateral), there are two types of skull cephalometric radiographs:

Frontal skull cephalometric radiograph

The frontal skull cephalometric radiograph is mainly used to obtain a view of the maxillary sinuses and diagnose cases of sinusitis.

However, and although its use is less, it can also be used to assess facial asymmetries and deviations from the midline.

Lateral skull cephalometric radiograph

Through this test, an image of the patient’s profile is obtained. The lateral skull cephalometric radiograph is the most used today.

This is because, in general, it is the most useful when planning orthodontic and orthognathic surgery treatments.

What are the benefits of cephalometric radiography?

Skull cephalometric radiography, whether lateral or frontal, has a number of advantages. The most relevant are the following:

It allows detecting numerous bite or occlusion problems, as well as other types of skeletal malformations (of the bones of the face): class II, class III, etc.
It serves to complement other tests: together with other techniques (panoramic radiographs, intraoral and extraoral photographs, and mouth molds) it allows diagnosing and planning a large number of dental treatments.

Can I have a cephalometric radiograph if I am pregnant?

As with any radiological test, cephalometric radiographs are not recommended during pregnancy.

Therefore, no X-ray should be performed on a pregnant woman, unless the dentist considers it extremely necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks.

In the event that it is necessary to take an X-ray during pregnancy, it is preferable that it be in the second trimester, as it poses less risk to the fetus.
