What are zygomatic implants?

Zygomatic dental implants are those that are placed in patients who have a severe loss of maxillary bone. Therefore, they avoid the need to resort to a bone graft. This is because zygomatic implants are longer than conventional ones and, therefore, can be fixed to the cheekbone, the zygomatic bone. The cheekbone, unlike the maxillary bones, does not experience bone loss. Therefore, they allow the implant to be fixed. Another of the main characteristics of zygomatic implants is that they allow the immediate loading technique to be carried out. That is, placing the prosthesis on the same day as the intervention. In this way, the patient’s smile will never be toothless.

How do I know if I am a candidate for zygomatic implants?

Zygomatic implants are indicated in people who suffer from severe maxillary bone loss. This, in the vast majority of cases, is because they lost their teeth many years ago or because they have worn dentures, also for a long period of time.

The fact of not having teeth or implants for years causes the maxillary bone to resorb and atrophy. And that, therefore, it is more difficult to place conventional implants.

Finally, zygomatic implants are indicated in people who have certain anatomical defects in their bone structure, which prevent planning a treatment with conventional implants.

How much do zygomatic implants cost?

Treatment with zygomatic implants has an approximate price of between 12,000 and 18,000 euros. This price range is because, in a large percentage of cases, patients who undergo this treatment have a high degree of edentulism. That is, they have lost a large number of teeth. And, therefore, they have a large number of teeth to replace with implants.

Procedure for Zygomatic Implants

1. First visit

In the first visit, the dentist performs an examination in the mouth and takes photographs and X-rays to have the maximum possible records of your case.

2. Case study

Dentists from various specialties meet in a clinical session to jointly study all your records, agree on a diagnosis and plan a treatment plan. In most cases it is necessary to perform a 3D scan of the mouth.

3. Molds

The treatment is explained to you and we resolve all your possible doubts. Next, molds of your mouth are taken to make your fixed prosthesis on implants. You must also present an analysis for the anesthesiologist.

4. Sedation

We make an appointment for the intervention. Before the operation, our anesthesiologist provides you with sedation so that you will be in a state of deep relaxation similar to sleep.

5. Surgical intervention

While you are sedated, the “natural” teeth are removed (if any) and the dental implants are placed. Once placed, the prosthesis is fixed on the implants.

6. Control and revisions

During the first year, we will carry out check-ups with the dentist in which a cleaning is also carried out, to guarantee a long durability of the treatment. After one year, annual check-ups are carried out.

Why is a temporary prosthesis placed and not the definitive prosthesis directly?

During the four to six months after the intervention, the bone is naturally remodeled. This means that, after this time, the temporary prosthesis does not fit in the same way as it did at the beginning. After four to six months, the bone is considered stable and will not undergo further modifications. Therefore, this is the right time to replace the old (temporary) prosthesis with a definitive prosthesis that fully adapts to the new state of the bone.

Is the treatment with zygomatic implants annoying?

Before starting the surgery, the implantologist will numb the area to be operated on with local anesthesia. This will prevent pain and discomfort during the procedure. In addition, in Abaden centers there is the possibility of performing the treatment under conscious sedation, which provides greater tranquility and relaxation to the person.

What is the postoperative period for zygomatic implants like?

The postoperative period of zygomatic implants is characterized by being very bearable. Normally, the patient will only feel inflammation and mild discomfort during the first 24-72 hours.

Is periodic maintenance of the prosthesis and zygomatic implants necessary?

Yes. The dentist will indicate the guidelines for the two fundamental aspects so that the treatment lasts over time: how to practice good hygiene at home and how often you should go to the dental clinic. In these visits, the implantologist will review the case and the hygienist will perform a dental cleaning.
